FCP Poker Superstars

I'm sure most of the reader(s) of my blog are familiar with the Pokerstars TV show on Fox Sports Net. For those of you who aren't, it involves 20+ professional poker players who play in multiple 6 handed tournaments and acquire points based on how they finish. After the preliminary matches, the players with the highest points advance with the ultimate goal of having a single winner.

I've entered a similarly run tournament which was set up by a forum member over at http://www.fullcontactpoker.com. Two separate tournaments were created one with a high buy-in ($250) and one with a low buy-in ($50). I entered the low buy-in and am competing against 31 other players.

Last night was my first of five preliminary matches which I was able to win, thus accumulating 10 points in addition to $40. (8 Players per match * $5 per person). The table was pretty tight overall and the match lasted about 90 minutes. It's a pretty good tournament starting with 1,500 in chips and 15 minute blinds (may be 12 minutes I have to check). I played pretty straight forward and had good card throughout the match.

After a slow start (down to about 1,200 in chips) I started accumulating, moving up to 2,100 then 2,700. I really only got lucky in one spot when we were three handed I call an all-in with A9 vs AJ and flopped a 9. At the start of heads up play I had a 3:1 chip lead (9,000 - 3,000). We battled back and forth and my opponent at one point got back to a 4,500 - 7,500.

The hand I won it on I was dealt 23 in the BB and my opponent just called. The flop was perfect for my hand- A45, giving me the nut straight. He lead out for 400 and I called. The turn was a third heart and my opponent bet 1,000 and I called again. The river was a black 8 and he went all-in, I called and he turned over AQ. Had he raised preflop, I would have folded.

If anyone is interested in seeing the rules, they can be found at http://home.comcast.net/~zsta2k5/FCPPC/index.htm.
